During this shoot we thought a lot about what it means to be an outcast. As a circus freak, a religious dissident, a believer, a woman, a woman who dares to wear strange things. When we posed beside the freak show signs a singsongy recording blasted from them boasting of a snake-woman "So hairy so scary but she will not harm you." Besides being the perfect title for a Riot Grrrl song the words were just painfully sad. There we were wearing these great clothes that people just thought were plain weird, giving us side-eyes and what not. I wanted to punch everyone in the face (only the men really) but would never actually dare do it. I guess in that way I'm like the snake-woman, I have armpit hair, and wear weapons as shoes but I still have no bite.
If you haven't already heard this gem, Diane Arbus said: "Most people go through life dreading they’ll have a traumatic experience. Freaks were born with their trauma. They’ve already passed their test in life. They’re aristocrats."
-Amanda
