let's just call this the year of the Grimes

This has been an epic year. There was an apartment, a move and another apartment. A graduation (mine). The start of our blog, some dye jobs, a lot of searches for platforms on ebay and a ton of glaring at catcallers -- even a bit of regretsy. We created a lot but not nearly enough. We listened to a lot of Kate Bush (with me getting the lyrics wrong 90% of the time) and Mattie wowed us all with her dance routines to the Law & Order SVU theme song. There was a little glamour but mostly there was a lot of getting real.

We served some executive realness at jobs and internships -- places where we couldn't wear sheer 24/7 (gasp).

We stopped living in dreams set to our ipod playlists and experienced being in the world a little bit. We tried to figure out how to be goddesses in a world that makes you feel like shit. Where it gets hot and smelly in the summer and you get thigh rub and you have no money but want everything and just end up with a bagel and an ill fitting top from Beacon's Closet but that ends up being enough.

Figuring out what you want to do for now and what you want to do forever.

Realizing that things you thought were so awesome (institutions like fashion/art/whatever) are more complicated and less awesome than you thought.

Thinking a lot about what happiness actually means and how to bring happiness to others. And then that biggie: how to make the world a better place? Soo many brain farts.

Also aside from a lot of cerebral-ing there was a lot of moving in our bodies. We discovered that what you do in the clothes is more important than the clothes themselves -- the adventures you go on. They're meant to get ripped up and sweat stained and uglier. Not just dressing but loving our bodies was an important revelation.

Sorry if this all sounds way dramatic but life is pretty dramatic I would say.

Any advice or lessons you learned this year or will try to live out in 2013? Get all Grandmother Willow on us and share in the comments.

Covered Saints

Mattie and I recently made clothes for a photo shoot with our pal/visionary/fellow weird girl  Lauren Poor. Lauren explains it better here but basically the idea was about covering the models bodies...taking the idea of ornamentation (something found in religious practices thus the saint part) to an excessive level so that the actual person is obliterated. It was really a dream to work with Lauren not only because her work is UBER good but she shares similar questions about what the hell this whole "fashion" thing is and how to use it for non-sucky purposes. It's also refreshing to meet creative people that really think critically about everything they do -- not just sending stuff into the world for no reason at all. Most importantly it was just awesome to make things with my hands. Since I haven't been taking art classes my urgent need to create kind of disappeared. This project reminded me of what a treat that it is.

Sorry we've been away for a while. I guess we've been unmotivated to document our outfits lately. It's been strangely freeing-- sometimes the best outfits happen when no one is looking.

We've actually decided that the format/function of this blog is going to be a bit different from now on. It's going to be more a platform for creative projects that we're doing, rather than outfit documentation. Fashion will always come into it in one way or another, never fear. Recently we styled and made clothing for a shoot with our friend Lauren Poor, whose work we really love. We also have work both personal and collaborative that we are very eager to share with all of you. Blessed be.

So Meagan from Latterstyle is basically the coolest and sent us this package of transcendent sublimity full of magickal goods including RISTO MOON PANTS and this really essential magazine on 80s goth music because she understands where were at musically. Basically a dark, unremittingly  dreamy dreary wonderland. We just wanted to quickly shoot us wearing the stuff Meagan sent because  , duh. 

One of the coolest things about having a blog is meeting really rad like- minded internet sisters who get why dressing is expression and sacred. It's fun and affirming, but more importantly being part of this giant internet conversation about fashion and feminism opens our minds and challenges us in the very best possible way. It feels like learning about feminism originally saved us from eating disorders and lame  situations with dudes,  but now we have to figure out how to live radically and transfer that liberation to others.
